Carol Gilligan, PhD
Carol Gilligan, PhD is best known as the author of In a Different Voice (1982), “the little
book that started a revolution.” Her most recent book, In a Human Voice, was named a best book of 2023 by the Times Literary Supplement and described as “essential reading for our time.” Her other books include Meeting at the Crossroads: Women’s Psychology and Girls’ Development (with Lyn Mikel Brown, a NY Times notable book of the year in 1992); The Birth of Pleasure; Kyra: A Novel; Joining the Resistance; The Deepening Darkness: Patriarchy, Resistance, and Democracy’s Future (with David Richards); Why Does Patriarchy Persist? (with Naomi Snider); and Darkness Now Visible (with David Richards). For over 30 years, Gilligan was a member of the Harvard University faculty, and held the university’s first chair in Gender Studies. Now at New York University, she is a University Professor, and with her students, she initiated the Radical Listening Project. In 1996, Time magazine named her one of the 25 most influential Americans, and in June of 2025 she was awarded the Kyoto Prize in arts and philosophy.
